Bread (Rolls and Dumplings )

3 qt pan
2 cups flour
1/4 cup shortening
1 Tbl baking powder
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup milk
vegetable oil for frying
1 Tbl powdered sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon

In large bowl, mix flour, shortening, baking powder & salt. Mix like pastry to coarse crumbs. Add milk, stir until dough holds together. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead about 3 minutes. With rolling pin, roll half the dough into 9 x 12 rectangle. Cut into 3 x 3 squares. Repeat. In 3 quart pan over medium heat, heat 1 1/2 inches of oil to 375 degrees. Fry 2 squares at a time in hot oil, turning with slotted spoon as soon as they rise to surface, turning until both sides are golden brown. Drain on paper towel. To serve as bread, leave plain, as dessert, roll in powdered sugar and cinnamon mixture.
