Apple Dumplings

SYRUP:
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup butter
DOUGH
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk

Heat syrup ingredients until sugar is dissolved. Set aside. Stir together flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until moistened. Divide dough into 4-6 equal balls. Roll out each ball to about 1/4 in. thick. Top dough circles with sliced apples and sprinkle with additional sugar, cinnamon and a pat of butter. Fold edges of dough circle over the top of the apples and fasten with a toothpick. Pour syrup over apples and bake for 35 minutes at 375. Baste occasionally.
