Preheat oven to 350
Cream shortening and sugar, beat in egg, stir in applesauce.
Grind cloves and allspice and add to mixture with cinnamon.
Sift flour, baking soda and salt and stir into mixture.
Add water. Stir in finely chopped walnuts.
Pour into grease and floured 9x13 baking pan.
Bake 45-50 minutes
