Grandma s Beef Stew

2 1/2 hours
1 1/2 lb Beef stew meat cubed
1/4 cup flour
2 Tbl shortening (or cooking oil)
2 1/2 cups water hot
2 Tbls onions chopped
1/2 clove garlic
2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp paprika
1/8 tsp allspice
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup tomato juice (or vegetable cocktail)
1 cup pearl onions (or chopped onions)
1/2 cup carrots sliced or baby
1 cup potatoes cubed
1/2 cup celery diced

Flour and brown meat in hot shortening or oil Add water, chopped onions, garlic, salt, paprika, allspice, sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and tomato juice or cocktail. Cover and cook over low heat for 2 hours. Sauté in butter pearl or chopped onions, sliced or baby carrots, cubed potatoes, and diced celery. Mushrooms, green peppers and other stew vegetables can also be added to sautéed vegetable. Add sautéed vegetables and cook over low heat for 20-30 minutes longer or until meat and vegetables are tender.
