Popcorn Balls

heat oven to 250 large metal dishpan
5 quarts popcorn
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vinegar
1/2 cup corn syrup (light)
1 tsp vanilla

Pop 5 - 6 quarts popcorn. Keep warm in 250 degree oven. Butter sides of heavy sauce pan. Combine sugar, water, salt, vinegar and syrup in pan. Over medium heat cook mixture until it reaches hard ball stage when tested in water. (250 degrees on candy thermometer). Carefully pour hot mixture over popcorn mixing with large wooden spoon to coat corn. Butter hands. Gather enough hot popcorn to form a baseball size ball. Place on waxed paper.
